Beginning in the early eighties decade in urban Jamaica, this music emerged from a response to the prevalence of roots reggae. First, it was marked by selectors toasting on top of dub reggae, soon progressing into a signature mix of synthesized sounds, infectious beats, and sometimes raw lyrics.
